Part Bloodhound May 25, 2011

I was reading in Expecting 411 one night and the authors mentioned how at some point pregnant women and their dog(s) will have a competition on who will smell food first. I thought it was funny and giggled out loud a little. You guys know we have a bloodhound mix and his nose is something fierce! He’ll get a scent in the air and go crazy… sometimes salivating at the mouth. Well, I can now keep up with him, minus the salivating.

The first time I noticed, rather predominately that I had officially become part bloodhound I laughed. Luckily it wasn’t a smell that made my gag reflex kick in.  I never really had a good nose to begin with- not sensitive to smells, sometimes couldn’t smell certain things, etc  Now, it’s a completely different story. I even think I could be used as a drug human at the airport or perhaps a bomb-sniffing human. Can’t you just see that? Me, standing around the airport, like a normal traveler but secretly sniffing for drugs or bombs? Silly I know, but so true.

The smell of chicken makes me want to gag. So does anything too sweet (like baked goods, candy, chocolate). At one point, I told Kevin “There’s a chemical smell in our downstairs bathroom and it’s awful!” He went in and smelled around. Didn’t smell anything. I told him it was nose cringing and I couldn’t believe he didn’t smell it. I went back in and discovered it was a candle that I’ve had in there for years… and a very pleasant fragranced candle at that! Needless to say, it’s been temporarily removed.

So, Puck and I are now even more connected. Both part bloodhounds, both sensitive to smells, and both able to track rogue scent in the air. I’ll never get mad at him again for losing control with a smell, because now I can definitely relate.
